One of the most common questions concerning exercise is what to do first – cardio or weights. First of all, if you are doing any exercise at all you need to know you are already doing great. My goal is to help you make the most of your exercise program.
Assuming you want to lose body fat, since that seems to be the most popular goal, let’s think of your body as a car. Not just any ordinary car, but a special car with 2 gas tanks. The first gas tank is the primary tank. Your car would always prefer to run off this tank of gas. The other gas tank is a reserve tank for emergencies. The car will only use the reserve tank when the main tank is empty.
Now, I just described your body! Your main tank is your stomach. Your body’s reserve is stored fat. When you exercise, your body prefers to run off the main tank, which is blood sugar and stored glycogen that comes from recently digested food. The only thing is we’d rather our bodies use our reserve, which is our unwanted fat.
In order to accomplish this, we either need to do our fat-burning workout first thing in the morning or we need to run our body out of gas so we can do it later in the day. One good way to do this is by doing our weight training program first. You’ll need the blood sugar from your previous meal or snack to help power you through your workout anyway. Then, after you use up all your glycogen for fuel during your strength program your body will be ready for a good fat-burning workout like running, walking, spinning, using the elliptical or taking an aerobics class.
This is also why you don’t want to eat too much right before doing aerobic activity if you are trying to burn fat. Your body will metabolize what’s been recently digested instead of previously stored as fat, sabotaging your “fat-burning” workout.
So are you ready to burn some fat? I don’t know about you, but I'm getting psyched just thinking about it. Watch out fat here I come!
